How to fix a Scrambled Display on a Message Board

Synopsis: It is possible for the display on your PCMS to become scrambled. There are a few different reasons that this would be happening. It could be loose connections, a defective component, or simply the product of a new part installed in the sign (ex.: communication card, touch screen).

  • Level: Intermediate
  • Time required: 5-10 minutes
  • Additional equipment required: Philips screwdriver

3. Press Detect and check the Matrix Size X and Y. Make sure they match up to your unit type (see figures 4 & 5)

3.1. If the matrix size is good, press save and reboot the unit

3.2. If the matrix size is wrong or not showing up, try swapping the communication card with a different one. If you can't, continue to the next step.

4. Run the Alpha Pixel test

Note: The alpha pixel test will display as many letters of the alphabet as possible. To see if your display has issues, check the front of the sign for any signs of scrambled letters on a display card. The first card that is scrambled is usually the defective one, try to replace it with a spare card.

5. Check the wires on the communication card inside the sign case

Note: Depending on the unit type, the communication card can be located on the left-hand side or behind one of the display cards

6. If wires are OK, verify data cables and end-line jumpers of the rows/columns that are scrambled

6.1. The data cables are located behind every display card, they look like small telephone cables and relay the data from one card to another. Ensure they are properly plugged in.

6.2. The end-line jumper is located behind the display card located at the bottom of your column, or at the end of each row if you have a PCMS-1210. Ensure they are properly plugged in.

Following these instructions should help you isolate the issue on your message board.
